Torrents. What to do, How to do it, Primer( using uTorrent & Azureus)

WITH ALL THE CREDIT AND THANKS FOR THIS

TO MONTAGE :notworthy:

For any new comers to this method of obtaining movies or various other files, below is most of the basic information needed on how to download and share files using Torrents.

This may look a lot to take in at first but a lot is mainly for reference in case of any queries, so don't be put off by the length of this thread.

THE ACTUAL PROCEDURE SUMMED UP QUICKLY IS THIS:

DOWNLOAD A TORRENT FILE TO PC
ADD TORRENT FILE TO A CLIENT PROGRAM
IT THEN DOWNLOADS MOVIE TO YOUR PC,
DONE.

The below is a description of how it works in greater detail which can be handy to know if experiencing problems.

All the sites that host the torrent files will have their own FAQ and useful info on how to create a torrent file using different programs (or clients/trackers as they are called) and how to overcome any problems so between those and this you should be able to find a answer to any queries that come up.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adding/Opening a torrent file with uTorrent

After downloading the torrent file start up uTorrent then click file, add torrent, and select the torrent file just downloaded.
Image

Just choose were to save the movie on your pc, click ok and it will then start the procedure.
Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Creating a Torrent file using uTorrent

In the program go to File » Create New Torrent (or you can just hit Ctrl+N).
Image

Now choose the file or directory you want to upload by pressing the appropriate button (1). An alternative way to add files is to drag the folder or file onto the “Create torrent” dialog.

Next, enter the file names of the files you wish to skip in the Skip Files box (2).

Each entry is separated by a vertical pipe (|), the asterisk (*) is used for matching multiple characters (or none at all), and ? is used to match single characters. For example, to exclude all ”.txt” and all file types beginning with “mp” and having a variable third character you would write: “*.txt|*.mp?”. Likewise, to skip all files with the word “torrent” in them you would write: *torrent*

After that enter the tracker's announce URL into the trackers list (3) this is obtained from whatever site you are uploading to and will look as below but with the full address in;
http://____________/announce.php

make sure you check the Private torrent option (4). Then press the "Create and save as" button (5) and enter an appropriate file name in the save file dialog.

For example, to create a torrent for all files in "C:\temp" except for the types in the above example, you should end up with this:

Image
Now proceed to uploading the torrent.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adding/Opening a Torrent file with Azureus.

After d/l the torrent file, start the Azureus program then click file, open, torrent file.
Image

click add files, and go to the just downloaded torrent file on your pc, select it, then click open
Image

Then in the center box click browse to choose the destination folder
Image

Select were on your pc you wish to save the movie.
Image

Then click ok and the torrent will load and start to download.
Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Creating a Torrent using Azureus

Image

[1] Next, insert the announce URL. Which you obtain from the site you are uploading to, and will look like below with the full address in;
 http://______________announce.php

[2] Also on this screen you can choose whether the torrent will contain a single file or a directory (folder). Normally its a single file option but if the movie has a separate subtitle file or multiple video files, like vob, then select the folder option. [3] Click the “Next” button to advance to the next screen.
Image

[4] On this screen, click the “browse” button to locate the movie file (or directory) on your computer that you have selected for this torrent. Keep track of the parent directory that the movie file is located in, because you will need to enter it again when you start seeding. Click the “Next” button again to proceed.
Image

[5] On this screen, you can leave all the settings on the existing default settings, except you need to check the box that says “Private Torrent”. [6] Then click the “Finish” button, and wait for Azureus to build the torrent for your file. Once it has finished you can close this window.

Image
Finally, go to the Torrent's site upload page, browse to the torrent file you just created, fill in all the movie info, and upload.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below are a few basic terms used and what they mean.

Torrents Primer 101

Recommended programs (or Trackers/Clients) to use are Utorrent and Azureus. They are free, and available at links below.
http://www.utorrent.com/ torrent client for Windows users.
http://www.azureus.com/ full-featured multiplatform Java torrent client.

(These are the easiest to configure.)

Some terms to come to grips with.

TORRENT FILE: A small file that is created containing the relevant information, e.g name of file, size, format, location, codes, that are needed to download a file through a client/tracker.

SEEDERS:
People, who have the full movie file on their pc, and are now feeding those who are downloading it.
When you first post a file and you are the main source, So usually will have to wait and allow a couple of other people to download the file first then they will take on the responsibility of seeding, so depending on if you can or can't spare the memory space on your HD you may then remove it if you wish.
The people downloading are known as:
LEECHERS:
Seeding = giving,
leeching = taking.

PEERS:
A person who is participating in file sharing. That is, a person who is transferring a file using P2P technology. Peers who have not already downloaded 100% of the torrent upload to other peers and download from them, while seeds just upload to other peers, improving their own Share Ratio that way to prevent becoming a leech.

RATIO:
This is reference to your ratio of uploading and then(feeding) back what you have downloaded to others (leechers)

SNATCHED:
Can be used as a negative, depending on circumstances.

Snatched is a basic term for downloaded the file successfully.
The negative alternative is when a person downloads the file (a snatch) but did not continue to feed (a arsehole 8() so others could download. ( OR TAKING BUT NOT GIVING BACK) to put it in simpler terms. Sometimes phrased as snatched and run.

TRACKER:
a tracker is a special server that contains the information needed for peers to connect to other peers. Trackers coordinate the BitTorrent clients, and also keep track of statistics and verification information for each torrent.

PORT SETTINGS:
These are what the client/tracker uses to communicate with those who are downloading files via your pc.

This can be one of the more exasperating things to do (again uTorrent and Azureus are easy to configure and you can set them to find an open port automatically each time you open the program up.)

The port setting is your listening port not being used currently by your computer for something else, after configuring your firewall this then allows the port to receive the incoming data and save it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DO NOT DELETE THE TORRENT FILE WHEN DOWNLOADING OR SEEDING.

When downloading a file in the client/tracker right click on it and you can commonly adjust the download speed
...you may want to experiment a bit with this...

Downloading speeds are going to vary due to Internet traffic, plus the number of seeders, along with their connection speed etc
...the bigger the ratio of seeders to leechers means the quicker you can complete your download.
...it usually takes several minutes for the optimal speed to kick in when you set it.
Try experimenting with the download speed, Just setting them to unlimited usually does not provide the fastest, so better to specify a specific speed, say 200-300 kbs per second, if you find it works and it's up to that or close raise it up to maybe 400 etc and see if it increases till you find a happy medium...

KEEP the upload speed (seeding) LOW when you are downloading a file, usually 20 kbs per sec is optimal,

Once you have downloaded the file it can be opened and viewed plus it will automatically then start SEEDING (allowing others to download the file) unless you decide to SNATCH it and manually stop it from SEEDING.

remember once you finish downloading it'll go to unlimited automatically if you changed the setting, so it'll get your ratio back up.

you will have an icon or indicator that your connection is good (usually green) or not working (red), you always want it working so you can send and receive, you may probably noticed, while you are downloading that you are alternately feeding others the parts that they don't have, you can only do this on a two-way street so to speak so you can see why you want the connection to be green. In cases where it isn't a go you need to reset the port, preferences should allow you to do that.
While you are in preferences bear in mind these adjustments...limit the number of active downloads that you want to have as a maximum. The fewer the active downloads the quicker they will download, just like if you were downloading clips, you wouldn't download ten at the same time. You'll also see some preference for setting the download and upload speeds. Universally, I think, if you set it at 0 (zero) it will default to the fastest speed, be sure specify 0 for upload as the default WHEN you are not downloading, leave the program running and it'll continue to feed the file and raise you stats (provided someone is leeching)

Don't bother downloading a Torrent when you're surfing. Its best to pause or exit the program when surfing otherwise page loads and downloads will take forever.

FILE FORMATS AVAILABLE:

Some will be in the standard Xvid or Divx avi format and some will be in a DVD disc format (VOB, IFO, BUP) they will all state what the format is before you download so you will be aware of what it is.

If you are downloading a proper DVD file it'll either appear as a Video TS file (no work required) you can burn directly to a DVD disc if required.
If they are zip or .rar files then you want to use WINRAR to extract.
You should extract the files to a specified folder and leave the downloaded one where it is so you can continue to feed
....delete the original downloaded file only AFTER you are satisfied with the ratio for uploading,...
then you can remove it from your program.

The best media player to view the various file formats in is VLC as this will play a DVD format along with .iso, raw even goofy .bin and .cue files it'll play the lot.

SOME POINTS TO WATCH OUT FOR:

Be wary of what you download and where from, stick to recommended sites, if a torrent on offer looks too good to be true it probably is...many just released films that end up too quickly on the net are Trojans, another reason to check the file with WINRAR before extracting. Many movies are available in very respectable .avi files.
An .avi movie of 1 and a half hours should be about 700 to 800 mbs.
A lot of files from Asia are put up in real media files that are about 300 -400mbs
...first rule of thumb beware of zipped in this size.
Smaller files like this really don't need zipping for BTing and they often use the compression to hide Trojans...

If you are on a limited bandwith per month then keep an eye on the length of time you seed any files as it could take you over your limit.

Once again, many thanks to Montage who kindly provided this information on the basics of Torrenting, and is much appreciated. :rockin:

I know this is only a 'sticky topic' and it's in the rarely visited 'Having problems' part of the board but I can't let this 'massive effort' go by without an equally massive thanks to 'Kangaroo Scarru' and 'Monty Montenegro Montage' for this amazingly detailed and thorough effort in providing the board members with this information!! WELL DONE GUYS!!

Thank you Loons, although I agree, it was a substantial task I happily defer any kudos to scarru who is the one who really deserves BIG props for turning a few fevered pms into a well presented, illustrated tutorial to point the way. It's typical of his professional approach and dedication to the board and his mod duties.
As for my part I want to apologize for any mistakes in the defining terminology portion, I pretty much tried to emphasize function and effect ...rather than accuracy.
To everybody I say for any errors to that end please forgive me and feel free to correct anything you may disagree with or question. I will say this though if you follow scarru's excellent tutorial and take my notes with a grain of salt...you'll be able to fake it ...
Watch out, it's addictive.

Well it's all Greek to me, but many thanks to scarru and montage for going through the effort to get this primer created. Hoping that it serves as inspiration for our fellow members to open up new avenues of exploration.

A quick heads up for torrents users, you can now use LimeWire to download torrents. I'm having fun with it as I type....

Hi Goldfinger :drink:

Firstly i just need to say that i need to update a few parts that i originally wrote on this thread as they are not quite correct, which was my fault as i havent explained things very well emoticon so will put that right soon :thumbsup

As for torrenting itself then its actually very easy to do but one of these situations which is very difficult to explain without making it look so hard, but believe me if i managed to do it anyone can =^

Its basically this, you first download a torrent program which you have to use to make all this work, most popular are Utorrent or Azureus, once you have one you can then download any torrent you want. [thats it basically]

Its best if you have a external hard drive aswell as any movies that are shared via torrents are hosted from your pc and not like a upload to rapidshare.

As for registering, i presume you mean the sites hosting the torrents.

If so then normally you wont be able to download from a members only site because the torrent file contains all the info regarding whatever the file is your downloading, what program made that particular torrent file, plus if it was posted on a members site then it will include a special key code which will only work with those registered at that site.

There are sometimes ways around that but wont go into it now.

Any free torrent hosting site will allow you to download films, tv shows, music etc, [stay away from the Asian based ones though as they are often high risk and can contain viruses and not media files which they advertise.] so in the long run its safer to stick with recommended members sites.

Allot are invite only now and behind closed doors simply to keep the numbers down and prevent anything happening like with the pirate bay site, which were taken to court.

But if your interested then i can get you membership on a couple of good ones, and as i found out the content is unbelievable with movies that you wont find anywhere else and not forgetting of course its all free. :jump

Hope this helps :drink: :rockin: :thumbsup

Thanks very much for taking your time and offer your help! :topmark:

It looks still a little complicated to me and I`m not sure if I really should try to work with torrent. :nailbite:

For example, I am looking for a movie since long time but only found it on torrent, if it`s really this movie

Link

IMdB

(I have read that the movie contains some Judo and maybe Barbara Eden in a Gi scene - don`t know if it`s true and worth the efforts )

If someone of the torrent experts can take a look at this movie or help me with download I would be greatful.

Thanks again, Scarru :thumbsup

OOps, i forgot to follow your reply up and regarding that link to the film,
Im 99% sure its just a con and seen the exact same offer a fair few times now when a film is said to be available via these links and clicking on them you eventually come to a page that states no access and asks you to join the site by buying membership to be able to download the film, [which wont even be there]
In fact you end up being redirected to a different site than it first stated.

[yeah, i was almost duped by this myself but luckily managed to cancel any payments before they were sent]

So id stay clear of this site IMHO infact any sites that offer movies which require a paid membership like these as they are just scams, and this particular one is definatly not a torrent site for sure.

The film your after btw is up as a request on the cinemageddon torrent site but not yet posted unfortunately, although if it does become available i will let you know :rockin: :thumbsup
